Another Painting of Carolina

Another digital painting under-way. playing with texture work between ArtRage 4 and Painter 12. Starting to get some interesting things happening. Haven’t decided if I like the composition or not – probably need to print this one out to see it completely at a bigger scale to decide on next steps.

Painting of Carolina

151-play-02b_800w This is a digital piece done with Lightroom, Photoshop, Snap art, art rage and painter 12 using a hand made physical texture. Really starting to get pleased with what I am getting. Still got a bit more to go with this one, but some of the more abstract work at the lower half is very pleasing.

I am now able to build up texture digitally as well as using the photo of the hand made stuff using a technique of graying over the painting and exporting back out. I can then strengthen the texture in Photoshop using the grain emboss tool.

Let me know what you think …

Final Image of Carolina

Decided to keep going with this one and did a third week on it, so it has had 11 hours in total. Enjoying working on the yiynova 19″ graphic tablet monitor. It is working really well with Artrage 4, and so far (touch wood!) both have been rock solid.

Last week I switched to my own home made texture and getting very pleasing results with it. I have started to make a new physical textue as I have noticed that the flat areas don’t work as well:

Recent Work from Leith School of Art

These are some pictures from the last few weeks. The first couple are 10-20 minute sketches done at the start of longer sessions. These are digitally painted by taking my laptop and Yiynova 19″ tablet monitor in. Created with Artrage 4.

We then started a 3 week pose (3 hours first week, 4 hours there after). This is where I got to after the first week:

The proportions were a little off (head too small particularly) and also I wasn’t quite sure how to keep this going, so the first step was to rough it up with lots of energetic marks. I felt the original was getting too tight too quickly.

I had also changed the texture from a default canvas to one of my own to get more variety as well. The close up below shows how this has brought in much more interesting texture, and the tools respond with more variety and less control to this texture.

My only issue with the overall image is that the horizontal format isn’t really fitting with the subject (one of the issues with a non-rotating tablet and deciding to stick with horizontal). I think I may well crop it towards the end.

image from course

I have now started to add the material to the Learn to Draw section of the site to provide some course material for free. This has the PDF’s pdf available and the first video tutorial as well. I will post the other ones shortly. These are all free, however if you would like to assist with the project, your contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Just the start

I have decided to put Basement Picasso back online. In the coming weeks I will be adding my artwork, blogging about the work that I am currently doing at Leith School of Art, publishing some older art course material for free and more. Looking forward to getting this going.
